THE NISSAN MAXIMA & NISSAN ALTIMA: TOP PERFORMERS IN PEDESTRIAN CRASH PREVENTION TESTINGNov 15th, 2019
When it comes to front crash prevention systems, you cannot do better than the Nissan Maxima and Nissan Altima! In fact, The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has just ranked the 2019/2020 Nissan Maxima model as being “superior,” when it comes to front crash prevention systems, while they ranked the 2019/2020 Nissan Altima as being “advanced.”

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ranking for both the Maxima and Altima is great news for Nissan, as they have been working very diligently to offer Intelligent Emergency Braking (IEB) with Pedestrian Detection across their lineup. “The well-being of those inside our cars is just as important as the well-being of those outside our vehicles,” said Rob Warren, Director, and Chief Marketing Manager, Nissan North America. “IEB with Pedestrian Detection is announced as standard or available on 10 Nissan vehicles for the 2020 model year, and we’re working on expanding the technology further as quickly as possible.”

Nissan Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection now comes standard on the 2020 Nissan Maxima, and is also available as standard equipment on the 2020 Nissan Altima SV and Platinum trim levels. Intelligent Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection uses a combination of radar and camera-based technology – which tracks nearby vehicles and approaching pedestrians. If a pedestrian is detected, the driver will receive visual and audible alerts, which are accompanied by automatic braking, helping to eliminate or significantly reduce the severity of an impact.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety evaluation consists of three tests. Each test is given at two different speeds, resulting in six possible outcomes. The Nissan Maxima was the ONLY tested vehicle to altogether avoid the obstacle in all six performed tests! “Carmakers often roll out these kinds of advanced systems in more expensive luxury lines or as expensive options, so the superior performance of the standard systems on the more mainstream Maxima is noteworthy,” said IIHS President David Harkey.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety launched its pedestrian rating earlier this year, testing 11 luxury and non-luxury small SUVs, in pedestrian crash prevention. In that test, the 2019 Nissan Rogue also received an advanced rating. For the 2020 model year, Nissan Safety Shield 360 – which includes IEB with Pedestrian Detection – is standard on SV and SL Platinum trims, the Nissan Rogue’s most popular models.
